Update: I found a solution which worked for me at the link below, but I'd still like to understand why my first try described above didn't work, if you know. I've tried compatability mode with XP SP3, no luck. (yes, I did it on the setup file from the temp directory.) I tried updating the Human Interface Device as described in We employ a team of techs from around the world who add hundreds of new drivers to our archive every day. Windows 7 users will need to visit Kensington.com to download the CSR Harmony driver.

I have the Intellimouse/XMBC setup at work, but hate the sloppy movement but it's the best I can do. Close that. (I think I had to create the Kensington\MouseWorks folder.) If you share the PC with others, it looks like there are profiles (Layers) you can set up.The only tricky things: You need to set your mouse wheel to use the About every 3 weeks, the settings would revert back to the defaults, and the only way I could figure out to change them was a re-install. The adapter is up to 6 times smaller than a typical Bluetooth adapter, so you can leave it in your laptop’s USB port without interfering with its portability. I'm willing to try them all, but thought I would seek advice for a fresh start.
